POWERBOATS: The Australian Offshore Powerboat Club will return to Hervey Bay this weekend for round three of the Offshore Superboat Series.
The May 7 and 8 races will be the 11th consecutive year that the event has been run on the Fraser Coast.
“The races add to the lively and varied calendar of events across the region,” Councillor Darren Everard said.
“Our reputation as a centre for events, whether it is cycling, sailing or powerboat racing, is steadily growing.
“There is so much happening that there is something for everyone nearly every weekend.
“On behalf of the community, I wish the competitors great racing conditions.”
The series has been going from strength to strength the last few years, particularly with the introduction of the new Sports Class boats, which will bring competitors from Melbourne, Mallacoota, Sydney and as far north as Townsville to compete.
The local Bay City Marine team and the Cleaver family will be running, keen to defend their wins in last year’s Sports 85mph class.
Next weekend will also see the return of two of Australia’s premier Supercat Extreme teams, with defending champions Dynamic Racing and Maritimo returning to the series after missing the first two rounds in Victoria.
A date clash with the international X Cat series prevented Maritimo’s Tom Barry-Cotter from racing in Victoria. However, they are all ready to go next weekend.
“Maritimo Racing is excited to be back in Hervey Bay,” Tom said.
We always receive such a warm welcome from the local community, which always makes it one of the special events on the calendar for the team.”
