SUNBURY – YEAR IN REVIEW

FOOTBALL: Sunbury Football Club has completed season 2022. WHAT A YEAR.

A huge Celebration of 50 years since the Club was formed and previously known as Sunbury Sports Association which incorporated many different sports, including Cricket-Softball-Basketball-Netball and Soccer. A reunion was held on the 26th—of March, which was a great success. One hundred seventy attendees remember so many fond memories. Two very special people were in attendance who were part of the first Committee. The Club was honoured to have Rob Paterson and Ken Beikoff attending, with both speaking of that inaugural meeting in which Rob was elected President and Ken part of the Committee. Numerous speakers told some amazing stories. Football is the only surviving sport for Sunbury Sports Association and is growing from strength to strength.

The Committee is very proud of our JUNIORS and SENIORS. Sunbury has a fantastic group of young people who play football with an average age of 18, with most still at school giving up Thursday afternoons and their Saturday mornings to coach juniors. JUNIOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR:  Byron Sawtell

What a fantastic season with every Competitive Team u/13-u/15 Division 1-u/15 FQPL-Youth Girls; they finished in the top 4.

Our very talented u/15 FQPL stepped up to take on the challenge of playing in a higher-standard competition. These kids achieved their ambition of playing in a Grand Final in Bundaberg against the highly fancied Across The Waves outfit. To get there, they had to take on the Minor Premiers Bayside Strikers, and this team did that in style, defeating the Strikers 3-0. to advance to the grand final.

The team is competing in its 4th. consecutive Grand Final has executed a fantastic achievement. The players pushed the highly fancied ATW outfit into extra time. In a nail-biting game, the Blues gave it their all by going down 3-2 in the last few seconds. Well done, Team Blue- Byron Sawtell-Matthew Town-Jai Richter-Talyn Muchow-Jaiden Goodwin-Ewan Anderson-Flynn Davies- Alistar Cassels-Cye Negus-Andrew Keys-Byron Griffiths-Tyson Griffiths-Nate Rosin-Isaac Cameron-Piper Coram-Jacob Darnell (Captain)- Coaches Grant Sawtell and Braith Gempton.

Jacob Darnell was voted Players Player, with Byron Sawtell awarded Junior Player of the Year. Byron had a great season and saved many a goal from being scored by the opposition. Cleaning up as fullback and moving the ball forward with great passes to teammates was incredible. He certainly covered some ground over the season. Congratulations Byron.

All our non-competitive teams had fun season-learning new skills and making new friends. Every competitive junior team earned the top four in their respective age groups. Well, done-what an achievement. The Club is very proud of everyone.

Both Ladies’ Teams competed well, with FQPL Team lining up with a new combination. The team competed with most of the Premier League Teams, but unfortunately, injuries took their toll. The game of the season was against the eventual Premiers and showed what they could achieve. Whilst going down 3-1 played with determination and held the strong Flames side for most of the game. Well done, Ladies. Grant Sawtell assisted coach Andrew Howlett.

Only three Teams were nominated for the u/17 competition, so it was deemed not a competition. After some discussions with Coaches, Parents, and the players, this team decided to tackle the Wide Bay South Men’s Division 2 Competition. What a fantastic effort from this incredible young team. To finish 2nd on the ladder of 13 teams, only losing two games, and that was against teammates the Blues, who were the minor Premiers. Congratulations: Blake Jeffery-Byron Griffiths-Caleb Parry-Chris Jones-Cooper Parry-Ethan Taylor-Harry Warren-Jasper Wilson-Jamison Harold-Oliver Coronel-Riley Colls-Riley Cameron-Riley Newman-Shaun Ransome-Thomas Martin-Toriaun Baker-Travis Kerswell-Tyson Griffiths and led by experienced Coaches Trevor Parry and Mick Taylor who guided this team exceptionally well. Massive achievement by the Whites.

Teammates, the Blues were crowned League Champions and contested the Grand Final. A great mix of older, experienced players and youngsters combined made for an exciting season. Unfortunately, injuries impacted the team with the loss of players but certainly made the opposition play hard to win the title. It certainly wasn’t due to a lack of effort. Congratulations: Josh Linwood-Jackson White-Jordan Cullum-Josh Cullum-Dion Cullum-Daniel Bennett-Bridie Stewart-Chad Pay-David Ezzy- Keegan Harvey-Hudson Harvey-Anthony Mollee-Dylan Podetti-Kyle Blackman-Michael Forbes-Grant Sawtell-David Chapman-Joel Neville-Cooper Cameron-Natthaphon Saengkham.

FQPL U/23: Wow! What a season for these young players. Some with their very first experience of senior games, and they competed very well. They are the only true u/23 team in the competition. This team was full of talented young people who were fantastic to watch. Finishing just outside the top 4 due to circumstances was still a tremendous effort against much older experienced players.
