AFL: A meeting between Wide Bay AFL clubs and the management committee on Sunday gave the green light to a shortened 2020 season.

The season to commence on the weekend of July 11 and 12 will run over ten rounds before a preliminary final and grand final.

“It was a positive meeting and I am looking forward to watching local footy return to the field,” AFL Wide Bay president Anthony Stothard said.

He admitted that the pandemic shutdown had been challenging with the government and sporting restrictions but are through the worst of it now.

“AFL Queensland have done a good job negotiating with the government in regard to the easing of restrictions,” Stothard said.

Saturday matches will include the under 18 and a half, reserves and senior competitions while Sunday will be dedicated to the juniors with under 18 and a half, 10 and a half, 12 and a half and 14 and a half playing.

In a positive note for the competition the Maryborough Bears return to play in the reserves competition.

The under 8 and a half and 10 and a half competitions will commence on July 19.

The preliminary finals will be played at Bay Power while Grand Final day will be in Bundaberg at Across the Waves.

Stothard wanted to thank the clubs and volunteers for their hard work and remaining positive during this difficult situation.

“It’s been a long road but footy will be back on the field,” he said.
